Château d’Ermenonville
Built in 987 under Hugues Capet, Ermenonville Castle saw Joan of Arc in 1429 and Louis XI in 1474. In 1765, René Hatte left his son-in-law the Marquis de Girardin, Ermenonville, a castle in the middle of a swamp. After his Grand Tour and the discovery of the English gardens, he decided to transform the Ermenonville gardens into an ode to nature.
In contrast to the symmetry of the French-style gardens which aim to show the triumph of man, the Ermenonville gardens evoke the inspiration of nature and lead the walker to introspection in front of the grandeur of nature.
In 1874, Ernest de Girardin sold Ermenonville to Prince Constantin Radziwill, whose marriage to Mademoiselle Blanc, the rich heiress of the founder of the Monte-Carlo Casino, enabled him to carry out extensive work. The Prince remained the owner until 1927. On the eve of World War II, the estate was fragmented. The Castle was occupied by the enemy; at the end of the conflict in 1945, Ettore Bugatti settled there and mortgaged it to finance his mechanical research.
Today Ermenonville Castle is a hotel-restaurant and belongs to Mattieu Gufflet. It offers the experience of a castle life revisited within a rediscovered nature
